Little League All-Stars: Nogales Seniors win state championship, Bracket updates

Nogales National beat Mesa American 9-0 Wednesday night in Winslow to capture the Senior League Baseball State Championship. The West Regional will be from July 20-27 in Oakland.

Nogales starting pitcher Rafa Echeverria was one five batters who recorded two hits in the game. He struck out nine batters, walked two and scattered six hits in seven innings.

Jorge Amaya went 2 for 4 with a triple and run, Denzel Montijo 2 for 4 with a run, Ralph Felix 2 for 4 with a run and RBI, Carlos Peralta 2 for 3 with a double and run and Echeverria 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Andy Baldenegro had an RBI double and scored twice.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 13

STATE 8-10 BASEBALL: MESA (D-7)
Rincon 17, Canyon View 7 (4)

Rincon’s Calvin Williams, Victor Ramos, Braxton Sapp, Bryce Brown, Raelynn Tanori and Gavin Allison each recorded two hits.

Brown had three RBIs and Allison drove in four runs.

Ramos, Sapp and Allison each doubled and Cody Brinkley tripled.

Dominic Hainley struck out six batters in 2 2/3 innings of relief and also scored three runs with a single at the plate.

Walker Duncan and Grayson Dorland each went 3-for-3 with three runs and Casey Casper drove in three runs for Canyon View.

Sunnyside 8, Western 0

Josue Espinoza and Cruz Grijalva combined on a no-hitter, totaling 19 strikeouts out of the 21 possible outs in seven innings.

Espinoza struck out 16 with one walk in his six innings of work and Grijalva struck out the side in the seventh.

Espinoza also went 2 for 3 at the plate with two runs, a triple and home run.

Ezequiel Lorta was 2 for 3 with two runs, a triple and three RBIs. Oscar Quijada also drove in two runs.

Sunnyside 11, Mohave 5 (Elimination)

Angel Rodriguez and Omar Ruiz, Sunnyside’s top two batters in the lineup, went a combined 4-for-8 with four runs and two RBIs. Rodriguez was 2 for 5 with a run and two RBIs and Ruiz went 2 for 3 with three runs.

Omar Flores and Jesus Luevanos also drove in two runs and Carlos Urias scored three times and had an RBI double.

Rodriguez also struck out seven in 4 2/3 innings as the starter. Alex Obregon and Ruiz combined for 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief allowing two hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

STATE JUNIORS SOFTBALL: AVONDALE (D-2)
Thornydale 18, Williams 8

Nine of Thornydale’s batters totaled at least two hits as the team produced 22 hits to start 3-0 in the state tournament. Thornydale advanced to the championship round Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Avondale.

Elizabeth Lujan led Thornydale with a 4-for-5 performance with four runs, two doubles and two RBIs.

Lindsey Sanchez went 3 for 5 with a run, double, triple and two RBIs and Nayana Vandersloot was 3 for 4 with two runs, a double and three RBIs.

Rylee Harper, Alyssia Robles, Kaylee Busby, Rhiannon Plunkett, Camila Quintero and Kaylee Moussette each tallied two hits.

Moussette struck out seven batters in her six innings of work.

Mesa 11, Sunnyside 7 (Elimination)

Mayrani Muñoz went 2 for 4 and Jae Moreno and Yaki Fimbres each drove in two runs as Sunnyside’s run came to a close after earning the District 12 title.
