American Legion West Region: Tucson drops first game to Utah

Tucson High Post 7 lost the first game of the Western Region 3-1 to Utah. Tucson moves over to the elimination bracket where the team will face the loser of Nevada and Petaluma, California Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m.

Tucson took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Jaden Leon walked and Isaac Ramirez singled him home. That lead held up until the bottom of the fifth where Utah scored three unearned runs with two outs. Tucson left two runners on with one out in the top of the seventh.

Juan Hernandez went 2 for 3 and Maddox Jones, Leon, Max Leyva, Ramirez, Ramses Mada and Gabriel Valencia all picked up hits. Sebastian Contreras threw six innings with 8 strikeouts and no earned runs.

Sam Johansen led Utah by going 2 for 2 with 2 RBI and the Utah pitching crew also collected 8 strikeouts in the win. Utah (1-0) faces Hawaii (1-0) Thursday at 4 p.m.
