The Tucson Youth Football and Spirit Federation (TYFSF) held its annual Old Pueblo Classic Friday and Saturday at the Gladden Farms Community Park in Marana. It was long couple days of football and cheer and the Old Pueblo got a small taste of what’s to come this year.

New association president Don Riley announced a championship this year for the Flag Division and the championship will be named in honor of former association president and former University of Arizona standout Julius Holt who passed away in April at the age of 60. The Flag Championship will be held Oct. 15 at Pueblo High School.
In addition, the TYFSF Cheer Championship will be held Oct. 3 at Pueblo and the TYFSF City Championship will take place Nov. 5 at Pueblo.

Debbie Wakovich, the Cheer Director, is part of the AYF/AYC Hall of Fame Class of 2022. She will be recognized in December at the National Championships.
The National Football Foundation Southern Arizona Chapter was also on hand, including former University of Arizona head coach Tim Kish, who is the president on the chapter. The Arizona Bowl was also on hand as part of a youth football and cheer outreach program by both entities. The programs will be attending multiple events this fall including various high school games starting with Sabino’s opening game.

Named one of “Arizona’s Heart & Sol” by KOLD and Casino del Sol, Andy Morales was recognized by the AIA as the top high school reporter in 2014, he was awarded the Ray McNally Award in 2017 and a 2019 AZ Education News recognition. He was a youth, high school and college coach for over 30 years. He was the first in Arizona to write about high school beach volleyball and high school girls wrestling and his unique perspective can only be found here and on AZPreps365.com. Andy is a Southern Arizona voting member of the Ed Doherty Award, recognizing the top football player in Arizona, and he was named a Local Hero by the Tucson Weekly for 2016. Andy was named an Honorary Flowing Wells Caballero in 2019, became a member of the Sunnyside Los Mezquites Cross Country Hall of Fame in 2021 and he was a member of the Amphi COVID-19 Blue Ribbon Committee.
