DICK MCCONNELL THANKSGIVING CLASSIC

Nov. 23-26: Pima West

Catalina Foothills (2-0) returns to the championship final of the Dick McConnell Thanksgiving Classic for the second year in a row, after taking second place in the inaugural Classic to Salpointe last year. The Falcons will take on Ironwood Ridge (2-0) at 6 p.m. at the Pima West Gymnasium.

Ironwood Ridge beat Sunnyside 68-57 in a semifinal game late Friday night and Catalina Foothills beat Cholla 52-45 in the other semifinal. There is also a “round robin” section of the Classic featuring five local squads along with Scottsdale Coronado. Sabino and Tanque Verde are both 2-0 in round robin action. The three final round robin games will take place at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and noon followed by two consolation games and the third place game featuring Cholla and Sunnyside at 4:30 p.m.

The tournament is utilizing a 35-second shot clock with two 16-minute periods rather than four quarters.

Pima Men’s head coach Brian Peabody is hosting the Dick McConnell Classic, named after his legendary mentor at Sahuaro. Another one of McConnell’s protégés, is Sahuaro girl’s basketball coach and athletic director Steve Botkin. Sahuaro serves as the hosting high school program.

Mica Mountain, under head coach Gary Lee, is the host school for the Pima CC Christmas Tournament set Dec. 20-23 at Pima West.
