Pima College men improve to 7-0 with victory at Yavapai College

The Pima Community College men’s basketball team continued its hot start to the 2022-23 season as it won its seventh straight game to start the season on Saturday.

The Aztecs, a Division II team, picked up an 84-77 win at Yavapai College (Division I) in Prescott to improve 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the ACCAC.

The Aztecs led 43-42 at halftime but the Roughriders (3-6, 1-2) opened up the second half with a 7-0 run to take a 49-43 advantage.

Pima’s biggest deficit was seven points in the second half when they trailed 55-48.

The Aztecs went on an 11-4 run to tie the game at 59.

Down 63-62, the Aztecs put together a 13-2 run to take a double-digit lead at 75-65 capped off by freshman Mike Pope’s jumper. The Roughriders closed the gap at 78-74 but sophomore Traviar Jackson scored to halt the run and make it a six-point game at 80-74 with 4:42 left in the game.

Freshman Dillan Baker (Salpointe Catholic) scored a team-high 27 points along with five rebounds.

Jackson scored 17 points and had four rebounds while freshman Jamison Kay added 12 points and five boards. Freshman Jaylen Alexander contributed with 11 points and six rebounds.

The Aztecs return to the West Campus Aztec Gym on Wednesday when they host Scottsdale Community College. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
