The Pima Community College women’s basketball team trailed after the first half but bounced back in the second half on Saturday in a road win over Yavapai College in Prescott.
The No. 18 Aztecs (a Division II program) defeated the Division-I Roughriders 73-63.
Yavapai (3-5, 0-2 ACCAC) scored the first basket to start the fourth quarter and tie the game at 53 but the Aztecs (5-2, 2-1) used an 8-0 run to retake the lead.
They outscored the Roughriders 12-3 to start the final period to make it 65-56 with 5:36 remaining.·
Sophomore Matehya Aberle scored in the paint to give Pima a 69-63 lead with 1:36 left.
The Roughriders missed their final three shot attempts and the Aztecs converted with free throws from sophomores Luisa Chavez (Rio Rico) and Angel Addleman (Palo Verde) to put the game away.
The Aztecs went 17 for 22 from the free throw line.·
They took an 18-8 lead early in the second quarter but Yavapai outscored the Aztecs 24-12 in the quarter to lead 32-27 at halftime.
Pima started the third quarter scoring the first eight points to retake the lead at 35-32.
The Aztecs outscored the Roughriders 46-31 in the second half.·
Sophomore Aiona Johnson finished with a team-high 16 points as she went 7 for 13 from the field. She also had six rebounds and two steals.·
Aberle finished 5 for 9 from the floor and posted 12 points and six rebounds.·
Chavez finished with 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals while fellow sophomore Jaden Leslie added 11 points.
Addleman contributed 10 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.
The Aztecs will be at the West Campus Aztec Gym on Wednesday when they host Scottsdale Community College. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
