The No. 12 Pima Community College women’s basketball team took control in the first quarter on its way to victory on Friday in the second day of the Aztec Holiday Classic.
The Aztecs (9-3) downed Bellingham (Wash.) Whatcom CC 87-51 at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.
They used a 13-4 run to take a 22-8 lead with 1:52 left in the first quarter. Sophomore Camilla Norton knocked down a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make it 29-11.
The Aztecs put together a 15-5 run in the second quarter to make it 44-16 as they took a 48-24 lead into the break.
The Orcas started off the third quarter with a 3-pointer but the Aztecs followed with a 10-0 run and at one point had outscored Whatcom 24-8 in the quarter to make it 72-35.
Sophomore Luisa Chavez (Rio Rico grad) finished with a game-high 16 points as she went 5 for 10 from the field and 5 for 6 from the free throw line. She added six rebounds, four assists, two blocks and one steal.
Sophomore Torrance Begay added 12 points, six rebounds, two steals and one block. Sophomore Aiona Johnson was 3 for 6 from the field and 2 for 4 from beyond the arc as she scored 10 points off the bench.
Freshman Dominique Acosta (Nogales) had nine points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Angel Addleman (Palo Verde HS) contributed with eight points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.
The Aztecs close out play in the Aztec Holiday Classic on Saturday when they face off against Big Spring (Texas) Howard College at 8:00 p.m.
