Noteworthy: The team returns three (Nayeli Nidez-Acuña, Gabi Delgado and Lexi Delgado) All-Region players and another two (Estefani Cordova and Alana Felix) who earned honorable mention from last year as it transitions to a difficult overall 6A conference. … Nidez-Acuña, a three-year starter as a junior, is on pace to score more than 1,000 career points while grabbing more than 800 rebounds by the end of her senior year. She is at 639 points and 518 rebounds. … Justin Delgado is in his third season at Sunnyside after taking Baboquivari’s boys team to the state semifinals in 2019-20. One of his assistants is his dad Pete Delgado, the head football and baseball coach at Baboquivari. Justin’s daughters Gabi and Lexi are senior captains for the Blue Devils. … Sunnyside is off to an 11-6 start, which is only three wins short of last season’s 14-11 record.

Coach’s comment: “This team takes a lot of pride in our off the court accomplishments as much as our on the court ones. Everyone in the program is currently and has been academically eligible since the start of the season. We are carrying our largest roster of varsity players because we are more than basketball and everyone on the team has a role. We are a small fast-paced team from the southside of Tucson that loves to play defense and get up and down the court. Outside the common goal of winning our region, we are hoping to make a deep run into the 6A state tournament this season.”
