Hi Wildcat Fans!

For this week, I decided to talk with one of our freshman pitchers and share her story with everyone. Her name is Sydney Somerndike and she is one of the funniest people I have ever met. As a freshman coming in your nerves are at a high every single day and you are trying to prove yourself every practice. I think Syd did a great job in the fall making her presence known and just being a great teammate overall. She is going to be a key role for us this year. Not only does she challenge us as hitters but she also helps me become better every practice. She is so helpful on and off the field. I think Syd is ready for the challenge of pitching against the Pac12 and I know she will compete with every pitch she throws.

Syd is from Villa Park, California, and went to Villa Park High School. When I asked her who her biggest supporters were she said her Mom and Dad, Susan and John, because they spend lots of time and money to help her chase her dream. Syd has a passion for softball and it shows on the field. She said she plays softball because of the competition, teamwork, and challenges she faces as a player. “I play because I want to become the best person, player and teammate I can be,” she said. Along with softball, Syd loves to hang out with her family and friends. They bring her joy when she is not on the field. When she is with her family and friends they like to go out to eat, spend time together, and watch movies together.

Sydney gave a recap of her first semester in college. She is studying Broadcast Journalism and is interested in broadcasting when she is done with school. She dealt with a frustrating injury early in the fall and quickly learned how much she loves this team. She appreciates all of the support our team has given her and is looking forward to getting better throughout the season. Syd said she is most excited for “competing against the best with the best team.”

A couple of fun facts about Syd are that she loves dark chocolate, her favorite TV show is New Girl, and she loves listening to Harry Styles. I can’t wait to play with her this season and make a run for the National Championship.
