The Pima baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Community Christian College on Friday at the West Campus Aztec Baseball Field with sophomore left-handed pitchers Matt Romero and Anu Reis combining on a no-hitter in the second game.

After Community Christian (based in Redlands, Calif.) won the first game 1-0, Romero and Reis had a shut-down performance in the 20-0 win for Pima in seven innings.

Game 1: Community Christian College Saints 1, Pima CC Aztecs 0:

The Aztecs (10-4) finished with three hits but drew eight walks. They stranded seven runners on base for the game. Freshman Benji Cazares (Tucson High) was 1 for 1 with two walks. Freshman David Shackelford went 1 for 3 with a stolen base while sophomore Bradon Mondeau (Cienega) finished 1 for 4 with a double.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 20, Community Christian College Saints 0 (7 innings):

Romero and Reis combined for Pima’s first no-hitter since Darius Garcia’s five-inning performance (seven strikeouts and two walks against GateWay Community College last March). It was the first seven-inning no hitter since CDO grad Mason Myhre’s gave up one run (earned) and had 11 strikeouts vs. Chandler-Gilbert Community College on April 28, 2018.

Romero pitched four innings with seven strikeouts and one walk on 52 pitches. Reis threw the final three innings with three strikeouts and three walks on 48 pitches.

The Pima offense scored in every inning to seal the run-rule victory. The Aztecs hit five triples for the game, which included two from freshman Brant Kragel. He hit a two-run RBI triple in the fourth inning to score Mondeau and sophomore Hunter Faildo to make it 10-0.

He hit another RBI triple in the sixth inning to bring in sophomore Kaden Stremick as Pima led 19-0 at that point.

Kragel finished the game 2 for 3 with three RBIs and three runs. Freshman Elijah Reeves (Marana) went 2 for 2 with three RBIs, two runs scored and two walks. He hit a two-run RBI triple in the fifth inning plating sophomore Rocco Gump (son of former Arizona baseball player Chris Gump) and freshman Austin Madsen (Canyon del Oro) to put the score at 18-0.

Mondeau finished the game 3 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs while freshman Ruben Castro (Tucson High) went 1 for 4 with three RBIs and a run.

Sophomore Luis Garcia (Salpointe) closed out the game going 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run.
