Sunnyside capped its 6-0 start to the 2023 season by defeating Williams Field 5-3 with three runs in the top of the seventh inning on Saturday in the final game of the Westwood/Dobson Invitational in Mesa.
The Blue Devils are playing under interim head coach Ruben Cazares after 29-year coach Pete Palomarez resigned.
Tatyana Vega, Sunnyside’s sophomore ace, earned the victory over Williams Field pitching a complete game. She scattered six hits, allowed two earned runs, struck out nine and walked two.
Sunnyside trailed 3-2 until the Blue Devils rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh highlighted by Lauryn Carbajal’s two-run home run with one out.
The lead increased to 5-3 following freshman Ashley Rosthenhausler’s double and Gracie Ayala’s subsequent grounder to second base that resulted in an error that allowed Rosthenhausler to run home.
Sunnyside outscored its opponents 78-7 in the six games it won in the tournament. The Blue Devils next play at Rio Rico on Monday.
