The Amphitheater School District held its annual fourth and fifth grade “Everybody Wins” Track Meet Friday morning at Canyon del Oro High School. Athletes from 15 elementary schools took part with over 500 girls and boys participating in competitions such as the mile run, the 100-meter hurdles and the long jump.
Former Dorado and University of Arizona hurdler Lezo Urreiztieta was honored once again. Urreiztieta was an individual state champion in 2011, helping lead the Dorados to a second place team finish. He passed away in 2013 from complications from brain surgery.
His high school coaches Rick Glider and Michelle Gerard were on hand along with Arizona head coach Fred Harvey, who spoke to the Amphitheater athletes on what it meant to, “Be Like Lezo.”
