Gallego Intermediate wins Sunnyside Middle School girls hoops championship

Gallego Intermediate’s girls basketball team defeated Apollo 32-22 on Tuesday night to claim the Sunnyside Unified School District championship.

The victory was the eighth boys and girls championship for coach Brooks Newsome.

The team includes eighth grader Janae Watts, daughter of Sunnyside legend Jermaine Watts, who went on to play at DePaul. Her sister Jordan is a sophomore at Salpointe who was part of the Lancers’ state championship team last season.

Leading scorer Dora Medina is headed to Sunnyside next season.

Carissa Palomarez is a standout swimmer and softball player who will attend Salpointe.
