Pima College softball No. 3 in region tournament after completing regular season 35-21

The Pima College softball team closed out the regular season on Saturday at Glendale with a split of a doubleheader and will be the No. 3 seed in the upcoming NJCAA Region I, Division II tournament at Thatcher.

The Aztecs (35-21, 31-17 in ACCAC) will play No. 2 Central Arizona on Friday. All games for the double elimination tournament will be held at No. 1 seed Eastern Arizona.

The Aztecs were led on offense against Glendale (13-43, 11-37) by sophomore Analisa Gomez (Rincon/University graduate), who finished the day 5 for 9 with two RBIs and two runs. Freshman Mina Chacon (Tucson) went 4 for 8 with five RBIs and a run.

Game 1: Pima 6, Glendale 0

Freshman Alexis Tsosie-Hood pitched a complete-game shutout as she gave up three hits with two strikeouts and two walks on 86 pitches.

Chacon put the Aztecs on the scoreboard in the second inning as she hit a two-run single, driving in Tsosie-Hood and sophomore Stephanie Tapia.

Freshman Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita) added to Pima’s lead with a sacrifice fly to score sophomore Elise Munoz (Salpointe Catholic) in the third inning to make it 3-0.

The Aztecs scored three runs in the fourth inning as Gomez ripped a two-run triple to bring around sophomore Mia Casadei (Tanque Verde) and Munoz. Freshman Camila Zepeda (Tucson) followed with an RBI single to score Gomez.

Gomez finished the game 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a run while Chacon went 1 for 4 with two RBIs. Munoz was 2 for 4 with two runs and Zepeda finished 2 for 4 with an RBI. Tapia was 1 for 2 with an RBI and two walks.

Game 2: Glendale 9, Pima 8

The game went into extra innings as the Aztecs took the lead after the top of the eighth inning but the Gauchos tied it on an error and got a walk-off RBI single to end it.

Tied at 7 in the eighth inning, the Aztecs took the lead when Chacon hit an RBI single to bring in Tapia.

The Aztecs broke open a 2-2 game with five runs in the sixth inning. Zepeda scored on an error and Tapia hit a two-run RBI double to plate Zylinski-Wrobel and Tsosie-Hood to make it 5-2.

With two outs, Chacon drove a two-run homer to left-field to cap off the inning as Pima led 7-2.

The Gauchos scored five runs in bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings.

Chacon finished the game 3 for 4 with three RBIs and a run. Tapia went 1 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs. Zepeda and Zylinski-Wrobel each finished 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run. Gomez was 2 for 5 with a run. Freshman Madison Fillman-Moreno (Sabino) was 4 for 4 in the game.

Tsosie-Hood took the loss as she pitched the final inning in relief, giving up one run (none earned) on one hit.
