Sunnyside Signings: Nine Blue Devil student-athletes taking talents to college

Sunnyside Class of 2023 accomplished student Yeddailin Gonzalez is headed to Duke as a Gates Scholarship recipient, an honor that makes her an ideal role model for her peers and younger students in the Sunnyside Unified School District.

Gonzalez, a standout volleyball and tennis player during her career at Sunnyside, will study Biology at Duke after earning a 4.40 GPA in high school.

She is also the president of the National Honor Society, member of the STEP College-Prep Program and a mentor.

“I feel like the environment here is great,” Gonzalez said about her experience at Sunnyside. “All my four years I’ve been surrounded by mentors and students who are ambitious and push me to do my best.

“They helped me out and guided me. They made me believe that I can do it. That was a huge part of my accomplishments.”

The Gates Scholarship is a highly selective scholarship for outstanding minority high school seniors from low-income households. Each year, the scholarship is awarded to exceptional student leaders, with the intent of helping them realize their maximum potential.

Cost of attendance includes tuition, fees, room, board, books, and transportation, and may include other personal costs.

“It’s one thing getting the grades and one thing participating in extracurriculars, but I’m also part of this great program called the STEP College-Prep program and they kind of just guided me,” said Gonzalez, who was an AllSportsTucson.com All-Southern Arizona 6A second-team selection in volleyball.

“They gave me incredible resources and they prepared me for my interviews and my essays and what I should write them about, so I can say a lot of my accomplishments, they happened because of the resources I got from STEP.”

Gonzalez is one of nine students who were showcased at Sunnyside’s gym Friday afternoon, honoring them for advancing their studies and athletics to college.
