In his previous at-bat, Sunnyside’s David Blasi singled and tried to score the go-ahead run in the fifth inning but was called out at home.
With the game with San Xavier tied at 2 in the bottom of the seventh, Blasi had another opportunity to make a difference.
He came through with a walk-off single with one out and the bases loaded to give Sunnyside the 3-2 win and a spot in the District 12 championship round Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Manzanita Park.
After Sunnyside’s leadoff batter in the seventh flew out, Carlo Rivero reached on an intentional walk. Rivero showed power in his first at-bat in the first inning with a rope to right field that was snagged by Michael Fikes.
An error while trying to get Rivero out at second on Gio Figueroa’s grounder put runners on first and second.
Andres Valenzuela followed with a single up the middle that loaded the bases.
That set the stage for Blasi’s single down the right-field line that brought home Rivero with the winning run.
A pitcher’s duel between Rivero and San Xavier’s Julian De La Fuente was the story for most of the game before each reached the pitch-count limit of 85.
Rivero, brother of Francisco Rivero, who was part of Sunnyside’s Little League 2019 team that came a game from reaching the World Series at Williamsport, Pa., allowed three hits with 12 strikeouts and two walks in six innings.

De La Fuente tallied nine strikeouts with two walks while allowing five hits in six innings.
De La Fuente helped his cause by belting a home run over the right field fence to lead off the third inning.
Sunnyside answered in the bottom of that inning to make it 1-1 following a double with one out by Jake Galvez. He moved to third on a single by Santiago Zepeda and scored on a wild pitch.
San Xavier went ahead 2-1 after Andres Castro led off the fourth with a single and scored when the next batter, Fikes, tripled.
Rivero settled down from there, retiring nine of the last 10 batters he faced while registering six strikeouts.
Sunnyside rallied for a run in the fifth to tie the game at 2.
Andres Valenzuela and Blasi started the inning with singles.
After the next two batters struck out and flew out, Adrian Shinn was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Galvez followed with a single to center field that scored Valenzuela but Blasi was thrown out at home on the relay throw to end the inning.
Figueroa, the winning pitcher, relieved Rivero to start the seventh and retired the side before Blasi’s walk-off single in the bottom of the inning.
Sunnyside manager Anthony Rodriguez comments on the success not only of his Little League team but the organization overall. His team beat San Xavier 3-2 in 7 innings in a District 12 semifinal game. Sunnyside in championship round Friday at 6:30 pm at Manzanita Park. pic.twitter.com/O97BfzJgls
