Sunnyside advances to the American Legion championship series; Tucson and Mica Mountain draw even in other semifinal series

Post 73 Crush (Sunnyside) beat Post 8 Spartans (Vista Grande) 11-1 to take the semifinal round of the Arizona State American Legion playoffs Wednesday night. Sunnyside beat Vista Grande 4-1 on Tuesday night for a 2-0 sweep in the best-of-3 series.

Jose Grijalva went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs to lead Sunnyside. Grijalva also collected seven strikeouts while giving up two hits. Michel Muniz went 2-3 with two RBI, Jordan Mayboca had two RBIs, Jorge Ruiz went 2-3, Christopher Ramirez went 2-2 with an RBI and Joshua Barrios had a double. Ivan Lara had an RBI for Vista Grande. Lara, Preston Abel and Jonathan Reyna saw action on the mound for Vista Grande.

Sunnyside will play the winner of Post 7 Tucson (Tucson High) and Post 109 Bolts (Mica Mountain). That series is tied 1-1 with Tucson winning 6-0 on Tuesday night and Mica Mountain winning 12-4 on Wednesday night. The two teams will meet again Thursday night to decide the best-of-3 series.

Mica Mountain took a 3-1 lead in the first inning but Tucson went up 4-3 in the top of the sixth only to have Mica Mountain explode for nine runs in the bottom half of the sixth. Elijah Higuera went 2-3 with a double and three RBI for Mica Mountain. Noah Rodriguez had a double and three RBI, Thaddeus Pittenridge had two RBI, Ethan Hunt went 3-4 with an RBI, Camren Hanamoto went 2-3 with an RBI and Jayden Barlet had a double. Jayden Barlet and Jackson Barlet threw for Mica Mountain.

Jaden Leon went 2-3 with a triple and an RBI for Tucson, Gennaro Brito had an RBI, Jorge Castro went 2-3 and Aldo Teilon went 2-3. Guero Hernandez and Emrick Thompson pitched for Tucson.

The best-of-3 championship series starts on Tuesday, July 18.
