The number of former Arizona athletes who are active head coaches that went to more than 40 in recent years is still at a strong 38.
Some of those coaches who are no longer head coaches include basketball players Josh Pastner (Georgia Tech) and Miles Simon (Los Angeles Lakers’ G-League team), softball players Candace Abrams (Clarendon, Texas, Junior College), Amy Baray-Rocha (Salpointe) and Jody Pruitt (Phoenix Sunrise Mountain High School) and tennis player Danielle Steinberg (Colorado).
Recent additions include Colt Sedbrook (former captain at Arizona who played from 2006 to 2008 hired at Crown College in Minnesota on July 1), Damon Stoudamire (back to being a college head coach at Georgia Tech), Matt Brase (Pallacanestro Varese pro team in Italy) and Shelley Duncan (hired by the New York Yankees this season to manage their Triple-A affiliate at Scranton/Wilkes-Barr, Pa.).
Six are currently managing baseball teams this summer:
— Casey Candaele, Toronto Blue Jays’ Triple-A affiliate at Buffalo
— Clark Crist, Pulaski (Va.) of the Appalachian League
— Shelley Duncan, New York Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Pa.)
— Terry Francona, Cleveland Indians
— Jack Howell, Los Angeles Angels’ Single-A affiliate at Tri-City (Wash.)
— Rafael Valenzuela, Tampa Bay Rays’ Single-A affiliate at Bowling Green (Ky.).
