Sunnyside’s David Blasi and Giovanni Figueroa combined on a two-hitter in Sunnyside’s 2-1 win Saturday over Sierra Vista in an elimination-bracket game of the Arizona State Little League Tournament at Flagstaff.
Sunnyside, which has won five straight elimination games, will face Cactus Foothills on Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the elimination-bracket final.
The winner of that game plays Canyon View on Tuesday in the championship round at 5 p.m. Sunnyside or Cactus Foothills must beat Canyon View (4-0 in the tourney) twice to win the championship and advance to the West Regionals.
Blasi allowed two hits in 3 1/3 innings and struck out three batters in Saturday’s win over Sierra Vista. Figueroa did not allow a hit in 2 2/3 innings of relief and recorded six strikeouts with no walks.
After Julius Pacheco hit a home run to give Sierra Vista a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, Sunnyside rallied for its two runs in the second.
Blasi and Adrian Shinn singled to start the inning and Jacob Galvez followed with a double that scored Blasi to tie the game at 1. Louis Romero then hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Galvez.
Blasi and Figueroa engaged in a pitchers’ duel with Sierra Vista’s Hayes Moore and Crue Iassacson. The duo allowed only two more hits after Sunnyside’s three consecutives hits to start the second.
