Canyon View loses in opening round of West Region Little League Baseball Tournament

Canyon View, representing Arizona as the District 5 and state champion, lost to Hawaii (Hilo) 7-4 on Saturday in the opening round of the West Region Little League Baseball Tournament at San Bernardino, Calif.

Canyon View will play at 4 p.m. Sunday in an elimination-bracket game against the loser of Saturday night’s Northern California-Southern California opening-round game.

Hawaii advances to the winners’ bracket semifinal Monday at 4 p.m. against the Northern California-Southern California winner.

Canyon View squandered a 4-0 lead against Hawaii going into the fifth inning after producing two-run rallies in the third and fourth innings.

Lucas Runyan reached on an error with one out in the bottom of the third inning and later moved to third base on a single by Raj Abramian, who advanced to second on a throw trying to get Runyan out at third. Braydon Rehm followed with a single to score Runyan and Abramian to give Canyon View a 2-0 lead.

Easton Altherr started the rally in the fourth inning with a two-out double. After Ethan Burnside reached on an error, advancing Altherr to third base, Altherr came home on a throwing error by the catcher. Burnside advanced to second base. Miles Anderson then hit a double that scored Burnside to increase Canyon View’s lead to 4-0.

Hawaii scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning after sending eight batters to the plate. It added two insurance runs in the sixth inning.

Abramian, Rehm and Altherr each produced two hits for Canyon View, which out hit Hawaii 8-7.
