2023 football: 50 top Southern Arizona seniors — Sabino linebacker Jack Skaggs

Today marks only 12 days until the kickoff of the 2023 Southern Arizona high school football season with games scheduled Aug. 18. AllSportsTucson.com is listing 50 of the top seniors in Southern Arizona during this stretch. This is not a ranking. We acknowledge more than 50 quality seniors will play on high school fields locally this fall and we will report on them accordingly.

Jack Skaggs, 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, had a breakout season last year in his second year at the varsity level. … Top returning tackler for Sabino with 73 tackles with 1.5 sacks. The 73 tackles are the ninth-most at Sabino since the 2004 season. … Also had an interception and a caused fumble last season. … Honorable mention for the 2022 Sports360AZ All-Academic Football Team for Divisions 2A-3A with a 3.68 GPA. … Posted a season-high 13 tackles against Pusch Ridge last season. Also had 11 tackles against ALA-West Foothills. … Younger brother of former Sabino prolific quarterback AJ Skaggs, who graduated from the school in 2021.

Sabino coach Ryan McBrayer on Skaggs: “Jack is a long athletic linebacker. He got his first taste of varsity football as a sophomore contributing on special teams. The ability to be a downhill run stopper clicked last year as a junior and resulted in nearly 75 tackles. His weight-room numbers and experience have only risen over the last year so look for him to take another jump forward under new defensive coordinator Mike Wells. Don’t be surprised if that tackle total is pushing triple digits.”
