AIA power ratings as of Tues., Oct. 31 for Class 4A to 6A schools, including Open Division. Top 8 for Open Division and top 10 for all classes listed with Southern Arizona teams shown up to No. 25 in each ranking. Southern Arizona teams in bold.
OPEN DIVISION
Update: The AIA rating points system is baffling. After defeating the No. 30 team in 4A — Pueblo — two weeks ago, CDO (9-0) went from No. 3 in the Open Division to No. 10. Following their win over No. 33 Sahuaro last week, they jumped back up to No. 4. In actuality, CDO is No. 8 out of eight Open Division teams after applying the multiplier system to the power points — 6A schools are at 10 times the power rating, 5A schools are at times 9 and 4A at times 8. Therefore, one team has to jump over CDO after Friday’s games for the Dorados to fall out of the Open Division. CDO, the No. 2 team in 4A, hosts No. 11 Walden Grove (6-3) on Friday. A 4A school playing against the powers of 6A in the Open Division could be a mismatch whereas if the 4A team played schools in its own conference in the state tournament, it would be one of the favorites.
CDO coach Dustin Peace on the new ratings: “Well, it is frustrating for sure. Hoping that the teams below us win and that is enough to bump them above us. It’s just kinda silly any 4A team would be ranked this high. We won a game by two points this year to another 4A (No. 3 Mica Mountain) and that gets us in the Open?”
