Pima men open NJCAA Division II National Tournament at Kino North with victory

The Pima College men’s soccer team opened play in the NJCAA Division II national tournament with a 5-1 win over No. 9 Rock Valley (Ill.) College on Monday at the Kino North Grandstand.

The No. 5 Aztecs (13-2-1) scored four goals in the first half in the Pool D win.

The Aztecs will play No. 4 seeded Iowa Lakes Community College on Tuesday at the Kino North Stadium. Game at 5:30 p.m. The winner will advances to the national semifinals.

Freshman Jose Luis Martin Montealegre put the Aztecs on the scoreboard in the 13th minute scoring on a header just outside the box after freshman Brandon Sanchez (Canyon del Oro) put the ball in play on a free kick.

Freshman Nico Valenzuela (Salpointe Catholic) scored a left-footed shot outside the box to make it 2-0 in the 22nd minute. He netted his second goal in the 34th minute when he got a cross pass from Montealegre inside the box and drove in his shot to make it a three-goal advantage.

Montealegre capped off the first half with his goal at the 5:46 mark when he scored with an assist from sophomore Stetson Milligan (Cienega).

Sophomore Victor Loredo capped off Pima’s scoring as he drew a foul inside the box and finished the play by scoring on a penalty kick in the 73rd minute.

The Golden Eagles got on the board with a goal by Max Rebori in the 60th minute.

Sophomore James Lynch (Salpointe Catholic) finished the game with no saves as the Aztecs held Rock Valley to four total shots. The Aztecs finished with nine shots.
