Sunnyside great Roman Bravo-Young won three matches by technical fall, blanking the three opponents he faced, to claim the 57-kilogram (125-ound) championship at the Mexico Gran Prix at Mexico City on Saturday.
Bravo-Young, a four-time state champion at Sunnyside and two-time national champ at Penn State, beat his first opponent 10-0, second one 12-0 and third challenger 10-0 to claim the title.
The championship is a step toward qualifying for the Mexican national team ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Bravo-Young announced in July his decision to represent Mexico in international competition because his grandparents were born in Sonora, Mexico.
“I’m honored to represent the country my great grandparents and grandparents come from,” Bravo-Young stated.
