Sunnyside boys, Walden Grove girls capture Brandon Bean Invitational titles

The Sunnyside boys and Walden Grove girls completed their successful runs through the Brandon Bean Invitational at the Kino Sports Complex with championships Friday.

Sunnyside defeated Pusch Ridge 6-1 in the semifinals before getting past Tucson 3-1 in the title match.

Walden Grove blanked Buena 3-0 before defeating Tucson 2-1 in the championship.

Sunnyside outscored opponents 35-5 in its six victories in the event.

Angel Bracamontes Pulido led the Blue Devils with eight goals followed by Armando Alvizar and Johan Jimenez with six and Aaron Abarca with five.

Sebastian Barrios led the team with five assists and Alvizar and Pulido were next with four.

“This was a very big moment for our program to have our kids be able to win this game early in the season,” Sunnyside coach Casey O’Brien mentioned. “They’ve been really dedicated and working hard to make run for a championship.

“This is an amazing group of players that are very unselfish and focused on team accomplishments. My biggest take away from this tournament is that our team is extremely balanced, all of our players contribute and make impacts in the games. Very proud of these kids and I’m excited to see where this season leads us.”

Sunnyside next plays at Buena on Tuesday.

Walden Grove went unbeaten in five games in the Brandon Bean Invitational, outscoring its opponents 22-2.

Vivian Villarreal emerged from the tournament leading the state in goals (eight) and points (19).

Milana Eyrich had five goals and four assists in the event.

“This is why I coach — the happiness and smiles from this bunch.” Walden Grove coach Troy Bosley mentioned in a social media post. “To see all their hard work pay off, the reward to hard work translates off the field, too. So proud of these ladies starting the season off right with a first-ever Walden Grove Brandon Bean Trophy.”

Walden Grove’s next match is Monday against visiting Pueblo.
