Pima women improve to 7-2 following win at Chandler-Gilbert

The Pima Community College women’s basketball team got back to winning on Wednesday after Saturday’s loss at rival Mesa with a 61-50 win on Wednesday at Chandler-Gilbert Community College.

The No. 14 Aztecs (7-2, 4-1 in ACCAC) held off the Coyotes 61-50.

Pima closed out the second quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 26-16 lead over Chandler-Gilbert (6-4, 2-3) at the break.

Up 32-24 in the third quarter, they went on a 7-0 run with baskets from freshmen Gabby Lopez (Bisbee), Rylei Waugh and a three-pointer by Sage Begay to give Pima their biggest lead of the game at 39-24. The Coyotes cut it down to single digits as the Aztecs led 43-34 entering the fourth.

Freshman Kennedi Niemann hit a 3-pointer and sophomore Dominique Acosta (Nogales) scored on a jumper to open the fourth quarter and get the lead back to 15 points at 48-34.

The Coyotes hit back-to-back 3-pointers to make it 56-48 with 1:47 left in the game.

Acosta scored again to halt the run to put the score at 58-48 with 1:35 left. Waugh hit three free throws at the end to help seal it.

Waugh tip-toed came close to a triple-double as she scored a team-high 23 points to go along with 11 rebounds and seven assists. She finished 9 for 20 from the field.

Acosta was 9-for-19 shooting from the field. She finished with 18 points, 14 rebounds and two steals.

Freshman Rori Hoffmeyer was also a force on the glass as she had 14 rebounds to go along with three points. The Aztecs had 21 offensive boards. Hoffmeyer, Acosta and Waugh each finished with five.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Saturday when they host South Mountain Community College. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
