Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum (Andy Morales/AllSportsTucson)

Sunnyside senior Audrey Jimenez (10-0) defeated Gilbert standout Shawn Brunson and Gila Ridge standout Cannon Farrar to advance to the semifinal round where she will face Mesa standout freshman Adden Jarman. Jimenez is the first girl to make a semifinal appearance in a boy’s state playoff bracket.

Three other girls have placed at a boy’s state championship:

Miyuu Yamamoto (Corona del Sol) was the first girl to win a boy’s region title outright in Arizona in 1993 after earning a bye to the state tournament as a junior the year before in 1992. She made it to the quarterfinals both years, earning a sixth place medal in 1993.

Andrea Hughes (Catalina Foothills) took second in her region and then fourth place at state in 2006, after losing in the quarterfinals. Hughes transferred to Sahuarita to run cross country in 2007.

Shauna Isbell (Coconino) took second at her regional in 2009 and she took fourth place at state, wrestling through the consolation bracket.

Sunnyside has 11 wrestlers still alive in the semifinal round and Sahuarita is in a battle with Safford in Division III.
