No. 15 Pima baseball sweeps Mesa in doubleheader

The 15th-ranked Pima Community College baseball team picked up its 20th win of the season after it swept Mesa in a doubleheader on Saturday at the West Campus Aztec Field.

Pima (20-6, 8-4 in ACCAC) was led by sophomore Nick Arias (Tucson High), who finished finished the day 4 for 9 with three RBIs, two runs and a walk-off hit.

Sophomore Dom Felix (Canyon del Oro) went 3 for 6 with three RBIs and two runs while sophomore David Shackelford also closed out the day going 3 for 6 with two RBIs and two runs.

Sophomore J.T. Drake and freshman Maclain Roberts, the starting pitchers for the day, combined to throw 11 innings, giving up eight hits with eight strikeouts and no walks against Mesa (16-9, 7-7).

Game 1: (15) Pima 10, Mesa 0 (5 innings): Arias hit a walk-off two-run RBI single to right field to score Felix and sophomore Caleb Herd (Cienega) as the Aztecs capped off the game with five runs in the 5th inning for the run-rule victory.

Pima loaded the bases to begin the fifth inning.

Sophomore Jontae Hennesy drew a walk to score Shackelford to make it 6-0.

Felix followed with an RBI single to bring in sophomore Brant Kragel. Herd then walked to plate sophomore Ruben Castro (Tucson).

The Aztecs got it going with three runs in the first inning. Arias hit an RBI single that brought in sophomore Antonio Avila. Shackelford followed that with an RBI triple to score Arias. Shackelford made it 3-0 after he came in to score on a passed ball.

Arias finished the game 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs. Felix was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run while Shackelford and Kragel each went 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run. Avila finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run.

Drake picked up the win after pitching all five innings, giving up two hits with six strikeouts on 60 pitches.

Game 2: (15) Pima 7, Mesa 2: The Aztecs fell behind in the sixth inning but rallied off six unanswered runs to complete the sweep.

Down 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Shackelford led off the inning with a home run to left field to tie it up at 2.

The Aztecs loaded the bases, and with two outs, they took the lead after sophomore Elijah Reeves (Marana) drew a bases loaded walk to score Hennesy.

The Aztecs added insurance with four runs in the seventh inning.

They did their damage with two outs in the inning. After back-to-back walks from Hennesy and Castro, Felix brought them in to score after his two-run single that made it 5-2.

Reeves capped off the inning with his own two-run single as it brought around Felix and sophomore Benji Cazares (Tucson).

The Aztecs struck first with a run in the second inning but Mesa scored one in the fourth and one in the sixth inning to take the lead.

Reeves finished the game 1 for 3 with three RBIs while Felix was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run.

Shackelford went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run. Freshman Ray Jesse hit an RBI single in the second inning and finished 1 for 2. Cazares went 2 for 4 with two runs and Hennesy drew two walks and scored two runs.

Roberts got the win as he pitched six innings, giving up two runs (two earned) on six hits with two strikeouts on 82 pitches.

The Aztecs next play Eastern Arizona College in a doubleheader on Tuesday in Thatcher. The first game starts at noon.
