Pima women & men come up short in NJCAA Division II tournaments



The Pima women’s and men’s basketball teams had a tough Tuesday in their respective NJCAA Division II tournaments.

The women, the 13th seed, lost 80-74 to No. 4 Community College of Baltimore (Md.) County Essex in a second round game at Joplin, Mo.

The men, seeded No. 9, lost to No. 8 Des Moines (Iowa) Area 80-74 in a first-round game at Danville, Ill.

Both will play the rest of their tournaments in the consolation brackets.

The Aztec women (24-9) will play No. 12 Parkland (Ill.) (26-6) at 11 a.m., Tucson time, on Wednesday. Parkland lost to Iowa Western 88-74 in a first-round game.

The Aztec men (28-5) will face No. 16 Hocking (Ohio) (24-7) in a seventh-place quarterfinal game Thursday at 10 a.m. Hocking lost 100-93 to No. 1 Davidson-Davie (N.C.) on Tuesday in a second-round game.

Rori Hoffmeyer led Pima with 20 points and 10 rebounds in the loss to CCBC Essex.

The Aztecs committed 19 turnovers and CCBC Essex outscored them 31-14 at the free-throw line.

CCBC Essex went to the free-throw line 40 times and made 31. Pima was 14 of 20 at the line.

Rylei Waugh had 12 points and four steals and sophomores Dominique Acosta (Nogales), Taina Lee and Jordan Joe each had 11 points.

In the men’s game, the Aztecs were also affected by turnovers, committing 23 against Des Moines Area.

Cohenj Gonzales led Pima with 18 points while Dillan Baker (Salpointe) and Gabe Oldham finished with 14.

Baker, who is bound for NAU, also had eight rebounds.
