Five Southern Arizona baseball teams advance in respective state playoffs

5A: No. 3 Nogales 7, No. 14 Apollo 4

Nogales scored three insurance runs in the sixth inning after leading 4-3 after the first two innings … Alan Durazo hit an RBI double and Ralph Felix followed with a two-run single for the Apaches (16-8). Durazo, the leadoff hitter, went 3 for 3 with three runs and an RBI. … Salvador Valenzuela was the winning pitcher striking out seven and walking three in 5 2/3 innings. He allowed five hits and three runs.

Next up: Nogales hosts No. 6 Catalina Foothills (22-7) in a second round game Monday at 4 p.m.

5A: No. 6 Catalina Foothills 9, No. 11 Canyon View 6

The Falcons rallied back from a 6-1 deficit going into the bottom of the third inning by rallying for three runs that inning and then five more in the sixth inning. … Nathan Shoemaker hit an RBI single, Bryce Weege scored on a wild pitch and Cooper Kruk hit a sacrifice fly to account for the three runs in the third that cut the lead to 6-4. The five-run sixth inning was highlighted by Paden Good’s two-run single and Ganon Dwyer’s RBI single. … Weege picked up the win allowing one hit in three innings of relief. He had one strikeout and no walks. … Good went 4 for 4 with three runs and two RBIs and Shoemaker was 3 for 4 with an RBI. Weege was 2 for 4 with two runs.

4A: No. 3 Canyon del Oro 9, No. 14 Douglas 0

CDO (22-6) had a stellar pitching performance from Grant Young, who allowed three hits with nine strikeouts and no walks in a complete-game shut-out performance. Young threw only 74 pitches in the seven-inning game to improve to 8-0 with a 0.68 ERA. … Young also went 2 for 4 with an RBI. … Michael Jones finished 2 for 4 with four RBIs. Ernie Alvarez went 1 for 3 with a run and two RBIs.

Next up: CDO will host ALA-Queen Creek (17-6) on Monday at 4 p.m. in a second-round game. The Patriots beat host Mica Mountain 13-3 in five innings on Saturday.

4A: No. 4 Salpointe 3, No. 13 Walden Grove 1

The Lancers (20-6-1) defeated Walden Grove for the second time in less than a week behind the performance of Shawn Barros (8-1 with a 1.31 ERA). The senior right-hander allowed four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks in seven innings. … Salpointe trailed 1-0 going to the bottom of the fifth following a home run by Luispablo Navarro in the fourth.. Lucas Shannon led off the inning with a single and scored with one out after Connor Raetzman hit a single and moved to third on a two-base error. Raetzman then scored on a sacrifice fly by Rowan Sparks. … Salpointe scored its last run in the sixth inning when Aciel Guillen scored on a wild pitch after hitting a single with one out and moved to third on Barros’ double.

Desert Christian (17-3) used the pitching and hitting of Brett Vondrak to advance. Vondrak went 3 for 4 with a double and two runs and three RBIs and allowed one hit in five innings pitched with 13 strikeouts and no walks. … Ethan Craig, Jett Payne and Samuel Alday each had two hits for the Eagles. … Cooper Payne hit a two-run double and scored two runs.
