No. 9 Tanque Verde beats No. 8 Fountain Hills to advance to 3A quarterfinals

FIRST ROUND

No. 9 Tanque Verde 8, No. 8 Fountain Hills 3

Tanque Verde (19-9-1) went on the road Tuesday to Fountain Hills, a northeast suburb of Phoenix, to pull out the first-round victory.

The Hawks advance to the quarterfinal round in which it will play at No. 1 Chandler Valley Christian (24-1) on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Tanque Verde took a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning but Fountain Hills responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

The game remained at that score until the Hawks added a run in the fifth and two more in the seventh.

Trevor Carlson pitched a two-hitter with five strikeouts and three walks. He allowed two earned runs in the first and kept Fountain Hills in check from there. He did not allow a hit after the first inning.

Carlson was also 2 of 3 with a walk at the plate.

Leadoff batter Landon Walker went 3 for 5 with a run and RBI. Gavin Lyski went 2 for 3 with a run, triple and two RBIs.

Beck Caballero also had two hits, including a double and produced an RBI.

No. 12 Snowflake 5, No. 5 Pusch Ridge 2

Pusch Ridge ended its season 21-9 with the loss at home against Snowflake.

In Bubba Mustain’s last game of his storied athletic career with the Lions in football and baseball, he went 1 for 3 with a run.

John Sunukjian went 3 for 4.
