ROUNDUP: Bisbee, Tombstone, Benson & Willcox advance in 2A state playoffs

2A BASEBALL FIRST ROUND AT GOODYEAR

No. 3 Bisbee 6, No. 14 Veritas Prep 2

Bisbee used a five-run second inning and the pitching of Jose Mendez and Bryceton Meyer to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2A state playoffs.

The Pumas (20-6) will play No. 6 Horizon Honors (21-6) on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Goodyear Ballpark.

Mendez allowed five hits and one earned run in six innings and tallied nine strikeouts and two walks. Meyer entered in the seventh and struck out the side to end the game.

Meyer hit an RBI double and Jaxxon Alvarez a run-scoring single as part of Bisbee’s second-inning rally. The Pumas also took advantage of two errors.

Horacio Olivarria went 2 for 4 with a triple, two RBIs and a run and leadoff batter Sebastian Lopez was 2 for 4 with a run.

No. 4 Tombstone 4, No. 13 St. Johns 1

Tombstone (16-7) advanced to the quarterfinals Saturday, when it will face No. 5 Kingman Academy (15-9) at Goodyear Ballpark at 11 a.m.

Gabe Garcia struck out 11 and allowed only two hits with six walks in his six innings to earn the victory. DJ Elias struck out the side in the seventh.

An error and passed ball led to Tombstone’s two runs in the third when it took a 2-0 lead.

Trey Franklin’s RBI single was part of another two-run rally in the fifth. Franklin finished 2 for 3 with an RBI.

No. 10 Benson 4, No. 7 Pima 2

Benson (14-13-1) is in the quarterfinals after the upset win and the Bobcats will face No. 15 Willcox (13-14), which had an upset of its own, beating No. 2 Arizona Lutheran 6-5.

Benson will play Willcox on Saturday at the Goodyear Ballpark at 11 a.m.

In the Bobcats’ win over Pima, Dalton Crockett had a complete-game victory, allowing four hits with nine strikeouts and one walk.

Benson broke a tie at 2 with a run in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, Case Williams hit an RBI single.

The Bobcats increased the lead to 4-2 in the top of the seventh when Kellen Deskins tripled with one out and then scored on the play because of a throwing error.

Deskins went 2 for 3 with a run and two RBIs. Williams was 2 for 3 with an RBI.

No. 15 Willcox 6, No. 2 Arizona Lutheran 5

The Cowboys overcame a 4-0 deficit by rallying for three runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth.

Ed Tingle’s double scored Kash Macumber, who hit a double earlier in the sixth inning, to tie the game at 4.

Two errors by Arizona Lutheran brought home two more runs for Willcox, who took a 6-4 lead.

An error by Tombstone in the bottom of seventh allowed Arizona Lutheran to score a run. The game ended when catcher Ty Shull threw out a runner who was trying to steal third base.

Tingle went 2 for 3 with a run and two RBIs.

Jerry Reyes pitched the last four innings for Willcox and allowed three hits, no earned runs and two walks while striking out five.
