2024 Arizona football season countdown: 99 days to kickoff

To get ready for the upcoming Arizona football season, All Sports Tucson offers a countdown, which will include history notes and a look ahead to the season — a good way to keep Arizona football on the mind in the summer months leading up to fall camp in early August and then kickoff against New Mexico on Aug. 31 in the start of the Brent Brennan era.

A LOOK BACK — NO. 99 DANA WELLS

Dana Wells

With it being the 99th day until kickoff between the Lobos and Wildcats, the best player to wear No. 99 for Arizona is defensive tackle Dana Wells, who starred for Arizona from 1985-88. He was a two-time winner of Pac-10′s Morris Trophy, signifying the league’s best defensive lineman, as voted by the conference’s offensive linemen. He went on to play two years in the NFL for the Cincinnati Bengals and Arizona Cardinals. Now living in Phoenix, Wells is still actively involved with the Arizona football program and travels to most home and away games. He serves as the President of CBS Outdoor, which delivers a variety of campaign advertising media including billboard advertising, transit and street furniture advertising, digital advertising and mobile advertising. He has been with the company for more than 20 years and moved up from sales, sales management, region vice president, then to his current positions as president in 2007.

NO. 99 IN 2024 — DE CYRUS DURHAM

Cyrus Durham

Wearing No. 99 for the Wildcats is redshirt sophomore defensive end Cyrus Durham of Redwood City, Calif. He was rated by recruiting services as the fifth-best junior college linebacker in the nation, 11th-best junior college linebacker in California, and 65th best juco prospect in the nation. In one season at College of San Mateo, he posted 66 total tackles (35 solo, 31 assists), with 10.5 sacks, and 18.5 tackles for loss.

NOTE

Arizona has one high school commitment so far for the Class of 2025 — Kellan Ford, a 6-foot-5 and 215-pound three-star tight end from Danville, Calif. Ford also has offers from Arizona State, Washington, UCLA and San Diego State.

THEY SAID IT

“It’s been awesome. It is a super fun group and a great group to be around no matter the circumstances. We’ve seen a lot of improvement from the group.” – New offensive line coach Josh Oglesby on his line during spring practice.
