2024 Arizona football season countdown: 78 days to kickoff

To get ready for the upcoming Arizona football season, All Sports Tucson offers a countdown, which will include history notes and a look ahead to the season — a good way to keep Arizona football on the mind in the summer months leading up to fall camp in early August and then kickoff against New Mexico on Aug. 31 in the start of the Brent Brennan era.

A LOOK BACK — NO. 78 ROB WOODS

With it being the 78th day until kickoff between the Lobos and Wildcats, the best player to wear No. 78 for Arizona is offensive tackle Rob Woods, who excelled at Arizona from 1986 to 1988. He was a late bloomer who ended up as a fourth-round pick in 1989 NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. He didn’t get a chance to play in the NFL until 1991 with the Cleveland Browns and participated in two games. Played in junior college and at Eastern Washington before coming to Arizona. Woods, 58, was a sociology major at Arizona and now resides in Phoenix.

NO. 78 IN 2024 — OT GRAYSON STOVALL

Grayson Stovall

Stovall, 6-foot-3 and 310 pounds, is in his third year in the program after graduating from Chandler Hamilton High School. He made two appearances on the offensive line during the 2023 season after redshirting in 2022. Three-star recruit by Rivals and 247Sports. Helped lead Hamilton to 11-1 record and state open division semifinals as a senior. Excelled in the classroom, earning Academic All-State honors twice and posting High Honor Roll distinctions all four years.

NOTE

Arizona football players Keyan Burnett, Jacob Manu and Gunner Maldonado spent a week in New York City recently as part of the Hedge Fund and Wall Street micro-internship. Brennan met them there because he is seen in a photo with them. The opportunity was set up through Arizona’s professional development team.

THEY SAID IT

“Obviously, it’s very unique for three football players to get that kind of opportunity on Wall Street and the financial district. It’s something I’m very grateful for.” — Burnett

“It’s I’ll always remember and I think it had a big impact on me knowing what I want to do in the future and knowing what that route looks like.” — Maldonado
