Copper Hills (Sahuarita) beat Randolph 12-7 on Thursday to take a 1-0 lead in the District 12 Little League Softball Tournament held at Manzanita Park but Randolph tied the series up 1-1 on 9-6 win Friday night and an 11-6 victory on Saturday clinched the District championship for the team from Field of Dreams.
The reward for Randolph is a trip to the State Tournament slated to start July 5 in Verde Valley, specifically the Riverfront Youth Park in Cottonwood. Thornydale (Arthur Pack) will represent District 5 and Willcox will represent District 8.
Copper Hills took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI groundout from Jolette Trujillo, scoring Zoe Zincke. Randolph went up 2-1 on back-to-back bases-loaded walks issued to Analyiah Salazar and Kayla Robles but Copper Hills took a 4-2 in the bottom half of the inning. Isla Morsell, Samiah Bright and Zincke collected RBIs.
Randolph responded with two runs in the third to go up 4-3, fueled by an RBI from Deylani Gutierrez. Randolph added another run in the fourth on an RBI walk from Mya Drow and three more in the top of the fifth on a three-run shot from Analee Allen to go up 8-4.
Robles limited Copper Hills to an unearned run in the fifth and a run in the sixth on an RBI from Trujillo but RBIs from Mellanie Beltran and Shea Owen in the top half of the sixth proved too much to overcome.
Zincke went 2-2 with an RBI to lead Copper Hills and Allen went 2-3 with a home run and three RBI. Noheli Parra and Vynessa Felix took the circle for Copper Hills.
