Tucson’s Ernie Perez captures 14U USA Wrestling Kids Nationals 102-pound championship

Tucson youth Ernie Perez won all four his matches, including the championship by technical fall, to capture the 14U USA Wrestling Kids Nationals freestyle 102-pound title last weekend at Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Perez, who will be an eighth grader this upcoming school year, brought home the USA Wrestling West Regional titles in freestyle and Greco-Roman a month ago. That event was held at Herriman, Utah.

Perez placed seveth in the national Greco-Roman competition, earning All-American status in the event.

In the freestyle competition at Cedar Rapids, this is how Perez fared:

Round 1: Bye
Round 2: Defeated Mack Karmon (Florida) by technical fall, 13-2
Quarterfinal: Defeated Adonis Washington (Illinois) by a 15-6 decision
Semifinal: Beat Isaac Weber (Wisconsin) by an 8-6 decision
1st Place Match: Defeated Nathan Matthis (Maryland) by technical fall, 13-2

Perez has trained the last five years with Tucson Cyclones Wrestling, coached by former Sunnyside state championship wrestler Danny Vega.
