Six Tucson Turf teams still alive after two days of NFL Flag Championships

Seven Tucson Turf flag football teams traveled to Canton, Ohio, to compete in the NFL Flag Championships beginning with games Thursday and six of them remain alive after pool play and the start of some brackets.

The 13U boys team representing the Arizona Cardinals is the furthest along, playing in a semifinal game on Saturday against South Fulton (Browns) at 12:25 p.m., Tucson time. The Tucson Turf team is 4-1 after going 2-1 in pool play and beating Majestic Storm (Ravens) 22-21 in the first round and CC Elite (Texans) 33-26 in the quarterfinals.

All the brackets are single elimination. The games in the event and can be watched on ESPN, ESPN-Plus, ABC and NFL Network.

Tucson Turf’s 9U boys (3-0 in pool play), 9U coed recreation division (3-0), 11U coed recreation division (2-1) and 13U girls (2-1) begin bracket play Saturday.

The 15U boys team that is representing the Cardinals is 4-0 after winning all three games in pool play and beating GLFFL (Lions) 28-0 in a first round game Friday. They play Saturday in a second-round game againstg BGCNRI Raptors (Eagles) at 9 a.m., Tucson time.

In Friday’s win over the GLFFL Lions, quarterback Jake Rogers (son of former Salpointe coach Eric Rogers) connected with Christian Diaz for a touchdown. Diaz also had an interception that he nearly returned for a touchdown. Rogers and Diaz are with Chandler Basha High School, where the elder Rogers is now an assistant coach.

Tucson Turf’s 18U girls team that was the Cardinals’ representative went 2-1 in pool play before being eliminated with a first-round loss Friday to the Texas Fury (Falcons) 25-14.
