Former Arizona left-hander Avery Weems, who has missed most of the last two seasons after undergoing Tommy John surgery, made his return to minor-league on Sunday with the High-A Hickory (N.C.) Crawdads of the Texas Rangers organization.

He technically is on a rehab assignment with Hickory because he is on the roster of Double-A Frisco (Texas).

Weems, a 27-year-old native of Flagstaff, threw eight pitches in one inning, allowing one hit and striking out a batter in a scoreless effort of relief.

The previous time Weems pitched was on Sept. 22, 2022 with Friscro. He underwent the Tommy John surgery before last season.

Weems was a sixth-round pick out of Arizona in 2019 by the Chicago White Sox. He was acquired by the Rangers, along with Dane Dunning, in the trade that sent Lance Lynn to Chicago after the 2020 season.

He spent the 2022 season with Frisco, where he had a 5.14 ERA in 91 innings spanning 17 starts and nine relief appearances, with 107 strikeouts and 32 walks.

He played two seasons at Yavapai Junior College before enrolling in Arizona in 2017-18.

As a senior with the Wildcats in 2019, he led the Wildcats with 27 appearances that included eight starts. He posted a 4-5 record with two saves, a 7.15 ERA, and 47 strikeouts.
