Sunnyside senior wrestler Sergio Vega won his match by a 12-5 decision Sunday against Drew Gorman of Buford, Ga., in the prestigious Who’s Number One folkstyle event at Johnstown, Pa.
Vega, who will attempt to win his fourth straight state championship this season with the Blue Devils, took a 6-1 lead over Gorman by the end of the first period and stayed in command from there.
Their meeting was a rematch of the title Vega won at the USA Wrestling’s Fargo (N.D.) Junior Freestyle National Championships in July. Vega won that 138-pound title match 10-2 as a No. 5 seed while Gorman was the top seed.
Vega was rated No. 1 and Gorman No. 2 by FloWrestling ahead of their competition in the Who’s Number One event, which was the first time Vega and Gorman met in a folkstyle match.
Vega, a 4.0 student, is a Cornell commit while Gorman has pledged to Virginia Tech.
A “Fireman’s Carry” manuever by Vega in the first 15 seconds of Sunday’s match gave him a 3-0 lead. After Gorman secured an escape with 39 seconds left, Vega registered a three-point takedown on a cradle with 12 seconds left for his 6-1 lead going into the second period.
Vega’s escape with 1:20 left in the second period gave him a 7-1 lead.
Another takedown by Vega increased the lead to 10-1 with 1:27 remaining in the third period. He intentially released for a 10-2 lead. A Gorman takedown and escape cut the lead to 11-5 with 1:03 left. Vega had an escape in the waning seconds to boost his lead to 12-5.
In addition to his Fargo and Who’s Number One titles this year, Vega won his third state title with Sunnyside, finished third at the U20 World Team Trials, won titles at the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) Nationals and the Reno Tournament of Champions and reached the Super 32 finals, defeating Ohio State freshman Ben Davino in the process.
