The Pima Community College men’s soccer team earned its sixth straight win on Saturday as it beat GateWay 4-0 at the West Campus Aztec Field on the night the Aztecs’ team that reached the national championship in 1999 was celebrated.
The Aztecs lost 3-2 in that match at Trenton, N.J., against State Fair Community College of Sedalia, Mo., but State Fair had to eventually vacate the title because it used an ineligible player.
Pima finished that season 18-4-1 behind standouts such as Ivan Lerma and Rick Haddock.
The No. 4 ranked Aztecs (13-1, 12-1 in ACCAC) closed out the night with their ninth shutout victory. The Aztecs have outscored their opponents 36-1 in the last six games.
Sophomore Jose Luis Martin Montealegre scored a hat trick. He put the Aztecs on the board in the 10th minute and made it 2-0 with his goal in the 25th minute. He helped secure the win with Pima’s final goal in the 85th minute.
Sophomore Dohyun Koh had two assists in the game. He connected with Montealegre on his second goal and provided the set-up on freshman Florian Traebert’s goal in the 40th minute.
The Aztecs finished with 29 shots on goal against Gateway (1-11).
Freshman Alexi Cristerna Oleta finished the game with two saves.
