From the womb in Tucson to the World Series — the number of players born or raised here to play in the Fall Classic will reach seven when Alex Verdugo plays for the New York Yankees against the Los Angeles Dodgers starting Friday.
“Butterflies in my stomach, man, we’re almost there,” Verdugo told reporters on Thursday. “When we play (Friday), it’s more like switching from the butterflies to ‘let’s go. It’s game time.'”
Bet you didn’t know Verdugo is the second Tucson native in as many years to play in the World Series.
Arizona Diamondbacks center fielder Alek Thomas, born in Tucson in 2000, played in the World Series last season against the Texas Rangers.
Tucson’s history of having one of its own play in the World Series extends to Rincon High School graduate Pat Darcy — who was not born in Tucson but lists Tucson as his hometown because he was raised here — playing in the 1975 epic classic with the Cincinnati Reds against the Boston Red Sox.
Verdugo was drafted in the second round by the Dodgers in 2014 following his senior season with Sahuaro High School.
He wants to exact revenge on the Dodgers for trading him before the 2020 season to the Boston Red Sox in the five-player trade that brought Mookie Betts to Los Angeles.
“I was upset. I was pretty clear I didn’t want to go anywhere,” Verdugo said. “I understood it from a business aspect and all that, but I was pretty hurt by it.”
“You want to win and you want to kind of show them, ‘Hey, you guys got rid of me and maybe it wasn’t the right decision.'”
Verdugo was traded by the Red Sox to the Yankees last December for three players.
Other players of note included in the list of Tucson natives to play in the World Series:
–Former Canyon del Oro High School and Arizona outfielder Brian Anderson played for the Chicago White Sox in 2005 the year they won the title but he was not on the World Series roster.
–Rincon graduate Jason Jacome, born in Tulsa but raised in Tucson, was a left-hander on the Cleveland Indians’ 1997 roster but he did not play in the World Series.
–Pueblo, Pima and Arizona standout George Arias was on the 1998 San Diego Padres roster but did not play in the World Series against the New York Yankees.
