Pima opens 2024-25 season showcasing dominating interior presence

The No. 8 Pima Community College women’s basketball team opened the 2024-25 regular season on Thursday in the first day of the Eastern Arizona Classic with a 71-58 victory over Colorado Northwest Community College at Thatcher.

The Aztecs are an NJCAA Division II program while CNCC is in Division I.

Pima took a 21-15 lead after the first quarter and held the Spartans to just four points in the second quarter to take a 37-19 lead at halftime. The Aztecs held their biggest lead of the game at 22 points in the early minutes of the third quarter.

The frontcourt duo of freshman Kiley Sours-Miller (transfer from Arizona State) and sophomore Rori Hoffmeyer each had a double-double while helping the team combine for 40 points in the paint, snatch 21 offensive rebounds and outrebound the Spartans 49-30.

Sours-Miller finished with 18 points on 9-for-12 shooting from the field with 13 rebounds while Hoffmeyer had 16 points on 8-for-13 shooting and 12 boards.

Freshman Kennedi Niemann went 4 for 6 from the field with eight points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals.

The Pima bench scored 23 points as freshman Ahdiayh Chee led the way with nine points.

The Aztecs play on Friday in the second day of the Eastern Arizona Classic against Trinidad State College at 3:30 p.m.
