Pima women bounce back in Aztec Holiday Classic with dominant win over Central Arizona

The Pima Community College women’s basketball team won on the second day on Sunday of the Aztec Holiday Classic at the Aztec West Gym after coming up short in the opening day Saturday.

The No. 13 Aztecs improved to 10-3 using a 20-6 run in the fourth quarter to beat Central Arizona College 75-59.

The Aztecs will complete the three-game round-robin event with a game agianst El Cajon (Calif.) Cuyamaca College on Monday at 8:00 p.m.

Pima closed the second quarter on a 10-4 run to take a 36-31 advantage at the break.

Their 11-3 run to open the third quarter increased the lead to 47-34.

The Vaqueras countered with an 8-0 run to close the gap to 47-42.

Pima clinged to a 51-44 lead heading into the fourth.

Sophomore Mattanaya Vital (Amphitheater) set the tone of the final quarter with a 3-pointer to give Pima back their double-digit lead at 54-44.

Sophomore Kennedi Niemann’s 3-point play was part of a 20-6 run as the Aztecs took their biggest lead of the game at 71-50.

Freshman Kiley Sours-Miller, formerly of Arizona State, produced a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds as she went 9 for 12 from the field. She also had two blocks.

Sophomore Rori Hoffmeyer (Cibola HS) closed out the game with 15 points and eight rebounds as she finished 5-for-8 shooting from the field.

Freshman Lucy Land added 11 points off the bench as she was a flawless 4 for 4 from the field, 1 for 1 from three-point range and 2 for 2 from the free throw line. She also added five rebounds.

Vital contributed nine points.

Sophomore Amelie Buffill-Gutierrez (Sabino) and Niemann each had six assists. Niemann added seven points and five rebounds while Bufill-Gutierrez had four points.
