Pima men 16-0 following victory behind bench production

The No. 6 Pima College men’s basketball team improved its record to 16-0 — adding to its best start in program history — with a 106-65 win over PHH Prep of Phoenix on Saturday at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Aztec Gym on Wednesday when they host Grand Canyon University JV at 6:00 p.m.

With the game tied at 12, the Aztecs turned to their second unit of sophomore Cooper Jones (Buena), and freshmen Brigg Wolfe, Mason Hunt, Isaac Johnson and Kaelum Brown, who sparked a 20-0 run to put Pima up 32-12.

The five played much of the first half as the Aztecs took a 60-28 lead at the break.

The Aztecs used another 13-0 run early in the second half to take an 85-38 lead.

Jones had a team-high 19 points as he went 7 for 14 from the field and hit four 3-pointers.

Hunt finished with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. He was 6 for 10 from the field and 3 for 3 from 3-point range.

Johnson was the third bench player to score in double figures as he posted 11 points after going 5-for-7 shooting. He also added six rebounds and three blocks.

Sophomore Max Majerle contributed 12 points, five rebounds and three assists while fellow sophomore Kota Benson (formerly of Baboquivari and graduated at Mesa) had 11 points after going 3 for 5 from beyond the arc.

·Sophomores Cohenj Gonzales and Wes Ball (Marana) each finished with eight points and Wolfe closed with seven points and seven assists.
