Former Catalina Foothills standout Gavin Cohen was one of four golfers to make the cut of the Sony Open in Hawaii qualifying round on Monday (7-under-par 65), earning him his first PGA Tour start.

The competition rounds started on Thursday at the Wai’alae Country Club in Honolulu but play was suspended due to darkness for the first full PGA event of the year. Six golfers were tied at 6-under and Cohen was 2-under (Tied for 44th) through 17. The purse is $8.7 million with the top 80 slots earning prize money. The Pro-Am is slated for Friday and the tournament ends on Sunday.

Cohen played for Arizona as a freshman and finished at Loyola Marymount. He won the 2016 individual D-II state championship as a senior for Catalina Foothills and he also led the Falcons to a team title held at Randolph North.

Former Catalina Foothills quarterback Rhett Rodriguez is the new QB coach for West Virginia after his father, Rich Rodriguez was recently named head coach, Rhett was the offensive analyst for Jacksonville State last year

“I am proud of Rhett for the path that he has taken. He was a true student-athlete at Arizona and Louisiana-Monroe, and that will serve him well as he continues his coaching career at West Virginia,” Rich Rodriguez said in a release from the school. “He can relate to our student-athletes, and he has a great understanding of what we want and need to accomplish on offense. It will be special to coach with Rhett at my alma mater.”

Rhett was a quarterback at Louisiana-Monroe, in the Sunbelt Conference, in 2021 and at Arizona, in the Pac-12 Conference, from 2017-20 under his father. Rhett helped lead Catalina Foothills to a state runner-up finish in the 4A Conference in 2016. When he graduated, Rhett held the Southern Arizona career passing record of 8,694 yards and that mark held up until 2023.
