No. 6 Pima improves to 18-0, Brian Peabody earns win No. 250 with Aztecs

The Pima Community College men’s basketball team improved upon its school-record start, improving to 18-0, while giving coach Brian Peabody his 250th victory in his career with the Aztecs with Saturday’s 82-72 win over Scottsdale at the Aztec West Gym.

 Peabody, in his 13th season at Pima, has a record of 250-132.

He is approaching 700 career wins in his career, now at 694-55 in 32 years as a head coach, including stops at Green Fields, St. Gregory (now The Gregory School), Salpointe and Ironwood Ridge.

Pima (18-0, 6-0 in ACCAC) played its first conference game since Dec. 11.

Scottsdale (5-10, 3-3) went for the potential upset going on 17-9 run to cut Pima’s lead to 80-72 with 40.9 seconds left.

Sophomore Cohenj Gonzales was fouled and he hit both free throws with 31.7 seconds left.

The Artichokes opted not to foul again as the clock expired.  

The Aztecs took their first double-digit lead when sophomore Kota Benson (formerly of Baboquivari who graduated from Mesa High School) converted on all three free throws to make it 20-10 with 11:15 left in the half. The Aztecs held a 43-30 lead at halftime.

With Pima up 54-41, sophomore Gabe Oldham stole the ball and completed the fast break with a jam.

Gonzales hit his only 3-point basket to make it a 61-41 lead with 12:14 left. The Aztecs led by as many as 22 points.

The interior play of Oldham and fellow sophomore Wes Ball (Marana) could not be contained as Ball finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds. He went 8 for 12 from the field. Oldham closed it out with 16 points and 11 rebounds, along with five steals, five blocks and two assists.

Gonzales scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half. He did his damage from the foul line, going 7 for 8 from the stripe. He also had five rebounds and four assists.

Sophomore Max Majerle also scored in double figures with 14 points as he was 2 for 4 from 3-point range and 4 for 4 from the free-throw line. He also had five assists.

The Aztecs will play at Phoenix College on Wednesday in ACCAC action. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m. The Aztecs won the first meeting 113-59 on Nov. 20 at the West Campus Aztec Gym.
