The Pima Community College baseball team completed a sweep Sunday of a four-game series — the last three games walk-off victories — against the College of Southern Idaho at the West Campus Aztec Field.
Freshman Ramon Martinez laid down a suicide bunt towards third base and scored freshman Mike Jones (Canyon del Oro) for the win as the 23rd-ranked Aztecs (NJCAA Division II) defeated the Golden Eagles (Division I) by a score of 8-7 in 10 innings.
The Aztecs got their offense going in the first inning as sophomore Collin Senior hit a two-run RBI double to bring in freshman Ernie Alvarez (CDO) and sophomore Caden Richards.
Freshman Sean Barta hit a sacrifice fly to score Senior. Freshman Zach Plasschaert grounded out but brought in sophomore Nolan Ganter, who had doubled earlier in the inning. The Aztecs led 4-0.
Pima tacked on another run in the second inning when Richards hit a double with two outs to score Alvarez and make it 5-0.
The Golden Eagles got a run in the top of the fifth, but Pima got it back in the bottom of the inning when Barta scored on an error to put the score at 6-1.
Southern Idaho rallied off four runs in the seventh inning and scored again in the ninth to tie the game at 6 and force extra innings. The Golden Eagles took their first lead of the game with a run in the 10th inning.
Barta singled to start off the 10th inning to put the tying run on base for the Aztecs. Jones doubled and represented the winning run. Freshman Jackson Glueck grounded out but moved the runners as Barta tied the game and Jones went to third base.
Freshman Quintin Hennesy drew a walk, which set up Martinez’s walk-off.
Barta finished the game 1 for 3 with an RBI and two runs. Senior went 1 for 4 with two RBIs and a run while Alvarez was 1 for 5 with two runs. Richards finished 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run and Martinez was 1 for 2 with an RBI.
Freshman Andres Castro (Pusch Ridge) picked up the win in relief as he pitched 3 1/3 innings, giving up two runs (both earned) on four hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore Lucas Casey (CDO) got the start and pitched five innings of no-hit ball. He allowed one earned run with eight strikeouts and four walks.
The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Aztec Field on Tuesday when they play a non-conference doubleheader against Eastern Arizona. First game starts at noon.
