Local 2A schools split into three football regions, including struggling Catalina on its own

Catalina’s football program that has not had a winning season since 2007 was placed in a region full of other struggling schools in AIA’s initial football realignments announced this week.

The Trojans, 1-9 last season, have hired five different coaches over the last 10 years and will have another this fall after Andy Fetsis decided to become the junior varsity coach at Pusch Ridge following his only season at Catalina.

Catalina was placed in a tentative unnamed region that includes Scottsdale Coronado (1-9 last year), Kingman Academy (1-9), San Carlos (2-8) and Avondale St. John Paul II (1-9).

The 3A-6A realignments were also announced this week.

The deadline for schools to appeal the region placement is Tuesday. The AIA Executive Board will rule on the appeals Feb. 18, when the final football regions will be announced.

The other Southern Arizona schools at the 2A level are split in the 2A South I and 2A South II.

Bisbee, Palo Verde, Santa Rita, Tanque Verde and Tombstone are in 2A South I and Benson, Desert Christian (1A in its first season last year), Santa Cruz and Willcox are in 2A South II.
