Brian Peabody earns career win No. 700 in Pima’s victory over Scottsdale

Pima Community College coach Brian Peabody’s 700th career victory was achieved Wednesday night at Scottsdale, 34 seasons after he won his first game as head coach of defunct Class 1A program Green Fields.

The second-ranked Aztecs’ 95-71 victory over Scottsdale improves their record to 24-0. They are only one of two unbeatens in the nation. No. 1 North Central Missouri is 22-0.

The Dick McConnell disciple has now joined his former coach at Sahuaro in the 700-win club.

The late McConnell finished at 776-320 in his 41 years of coaching, 39 at Sahuaro.

Pima (12-0 in the ACCAC) was slow to develop its high-scoring attack against the Artichokes (9-13, 6-6).

The Aztecs, who led the nation averaging 106.4 points entering the game, took a 39-37 lead into halftime.

Pima controlled the tempo and the rebounds, resulting in multiple putbacks, to pull away in the second half. The Aztecs played to form, outscoring Scottsdale 56-34 in the second half.

Four players scored in double figures, led by 17 from Cohenj Gonzales, who made an official visit to Iona last week.

Kota Benson had 15 points and four assists. Gabe Oldham had the same amount of points and assists and also pulled down 15 rebounds. Mason Hunt finished with 10 points and Wes Ball had 10 rebounds and eight points.

Pima next hosts Phoenix College on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Aztecs won at Phoenix College 98-89 on Jan. 15.
