The Pima Community College softball team is 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the ACCAC after sweeping Glendale in a doubleheader in the Aztecs’ first home games of the season Tuesday.
The No. 15 Aztecs beat Glendale Community College (2-4, 1-3) by run rule in the first game and by rallying from a six-run deficit in the second game.
Freshman Jiselle Nunez (Tucson) finished the day 4 for 8 with six RBIs and four runs. Sophomore Aubrey Marx (Cienega) went 5 for 7 with an RBI and three runs. Sophomore Alyssa Noriega (Pueblo) finished 3 for 7 with three RBIs and two runs. Sophomore Cheyanne Ortiz (Tucson) was 4 for 5 with an RBI and four runs and fellow sophomore Natalya Rivera (Sunnyside) was also 4 for 5 with two RBIs and three runs. Freshman Arianna Flores (Salpointe Catholic) threw another gem while freshman Sariah Ferrentino (Sabino) pitched quality innings in relief.
Game 1: (15) Pima 9, Glendale 0 (5 innings):
The Aztecs’ bats came alive in the second inning, in which they scored six times.
With the bases load and one out, Marx hit an RBI single to score Ortiz. Nunez followed by clearing the bases with a three-run RBI double, bringing around freshman Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View), sophomore Talia Martin (Mountain View) and Marx to make it 6-0.
Nunez would score on a passed ball. Rivera reached base on a walk and later scored on an error to cap the inning as Pima went up 8-0.
Freshman Legend Otero hit a sacrifice fly to score Noriega, who led off the fourth inning with a single.
Nunez finished the game 1 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs while Noriega was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run. Marx went 2 for 2 with an RBI and two runs and Rivera closed it out going 1 for 1 with an RBI, a run and a walk.
Flores (3-0) picked up the win as she pitched all five innings, giving up two hits with 14 strikeouts and five walks.
Game 2: (15) Pima 13, Glendale 9:
The Aztecs rallied from a six-run deficit to beat the Gauchos and earn the sweep.
Pima trailed 7-1 after Glendale put up four runs in the top of the third inning. The Aztecs started to chip away as Noriega hit a two-run homer to right field to make it 7-3. Rivera followed with a triple and scored on freshman Julissa Lopez’s (Tucson) sacrifice fly.
The Gauchos got a run back in the fourth inning to make it 8-4 but the Aztecs produced another big inning to continue the rally. Nunez came through again in the clutch with the bases juiced as she knocked a triple into right field scoring Ortiz, Figueroa and Marx. Nunez scored two batters later to tie the game at 8-8 on Rivera’s RBI double.
Glendale retook the lead in the fifth inning, but the Aztecs countered once again and took the lead for good with two runs in the inning. Martin hit a sacrifice fly that brought in Ortiz and Figueroa, which put the Aztecs ahead for the first time in the game at 10-9.
Pima added three more insurance runs as sophomore Mari Asher (Canyon del Oro) hit an RBI double to drive in Rivera. Asher scored on a passed ball and Ortiz, who doubled in the inning, scored on a wild pitch.
Nunez went 3 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs, while Ortiz closed out the game going 3 for 3 with an RBI and three runs. Rivera was 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs and Asher finished 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs. Figueroa was 2 for 3 with two runs while Marx finished 3 for 5 with a run. Noriega went 1 for 4 with two RBIs and a run.
Ferrentino (1-0) got the win after she pitched four innings, giving up one unearned run on four hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Aztec Field on Saturday when they host Paradise Valley Community College in an ACCAC doubleheader. First game starts at noon.
